Senate President Godswill Akpabio has revealed the reasons behind his defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Akpabio stated that he switched to the APC to help secure victories for the ruling party across all South-South states in anticipation of the 2027 elections.
The Senate President made his remarks during a meeting with Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State at his home in Uyo, the capital of Akwa Ibom State.
In a statement from his Special Assistant on Media and Communication, Anietie Ekong, Akpabio expressed that securing victory in the states would positively transform the developmental path of the South South region.
He stated that during the APC administration, many of them felt it was necessary to transform their political approach. This change aimed to allow them to represent their people on a national level and have an influence in the nation’s affairs.
When I made that decisive shift to the APC, my aim was to bring our people from the South-South region into a central position.
Given the current political dynamics and all available indicators, it seems likely that the ruling APC will gain control of more states.
According to the Peoplesmind, the PDP holds power in Akwa Ibom, Rivers, Bayelsa, and Delta States, whereas the APC governs only Edo State.
