The Yobe State Hisbah Board has intensified its campaign against alcohol consumption by destroying over 170 bottles of alcoholic beverages, valued at N450,000, in Gashua, Bade Local Government Area. The confiscated items were seized during a patrol led by Hisbah officials at a local hotel in the area.
A vendor, allegedly involved in the sale of the beverages, was arrested and subsequently convicted by a Sharia Court. The court ruled that the sale contravened Yobe Stateโs strict prohibition on alcohol. Following the conviction, the vendor was sentenced to prison, and the court ordered the destruction of the seized alcohol.
According to the Hisbah Board, the initiative aligns with efforts to curb the rising trend of alcohol use among the youth, which the Board describes as detrimental to mental clarity and incompatible with Islamic principles. Yurema, a Hisbah official, emphasized the need to safeguard the community, stating, โThe council is resolute in combating this immoral act to protect our society from its harmful effects.โ
Malam Isah Ibrahim, the Zonal Commandant of the Hisbah Board for Yobe North, underscored the importance of the operation, highlighting its grounding in Sharia law. He expressed hope that such measures would deter others from engaging in alcohol-related activities.
The destruction of the alcohol and the jailing of the vendor underscore the boardโs commitment to enforcing Islamic values and maintaining societal order in accordance with Sharia law. However, the crackdown has sparked mixed reactions, with some praising the boardโs vigilance while others question the broader implications of such actions on individual freedoms and economic activities.
