TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew, who leads the ByteDance-owned platform, has reached out to Elon Musk for input on U.S. matters, according to the Wall Street Journal.
The report, citing sources familiar with the situation, reveals that Chew initiated conversations with Musk in recent weeks to seek his advice on a range of topics, including the incoming Trump administration and potential tech policy issues. Both Musk and TikTok have not yet responded to requests for comments on the matter.
While no specific actions have been discussed regarding TikTok’s operations in the U.S., the report notes that Chew has kept ByteDance’s senior leadership informed of the discussions. Executives are reportedly cautiously optimistic about finding a path forward.
Prior to the U.S. election, ByteDance executives had engaged with both Trump allies and figures close to Democratic nominee Kamala Harris. Trump, who had previously attempted to ban TikTok in 2020, stated that, if re-elected, he would not support such a ban.
