As the holiday season approaches, New York State police are intensifying efforts to catch impaired and reckless drivers, starting this weekend.
The state will implement fixed sobriety checkpoints and use concealed patrol vehicles to monitor distracted driving.
The special enforcement period will run from Saturday through Sunday, Dec. 1, to ensure safer roads during the busy holiday travel season.
Governor Kathy Hochul emphasized the importance of safety as Thanksgiving marks the beginning of the busiest travel time of the year.
The Port Authority predicts that 5.5 million drivers will be on the road over the holiday weekend, a period that sees higher alcohol consumption.
Last year, sobriety checkpoints resulted in 1,342 DWI arrests, 7,656 speeding tickets, and 970 distracted driving citations.
Those arrested for DWI could face fines up to $10,000, along with higher insurance rates and the risk of losing their license.
