Financial consultant Nwizug Sylvanus recently voiced strong criticism against veteran Nollywood actor Kanayo O Kanayo for allegedly demanding respect from fellow actor Yul Edochie. Sylvanus, in a bold online comment, argued that respect should be a two-way street, calling out Kanayo’s treatment of Yul as disrespectful. He expressed disappointment with Kanayo’s approach, questioning why the actor would insist on “respect” while allegedly failing to show it in return.
“How can Kanayo O Kanayo demand respect when he himself disrespected Yul Edochie?” Sylvanus wrote. “Respect is reciprocal. Once you are a responsible adult, seniority becomes less important, especially in a marriage or professional setting.”
Sylvanus continued by emphasizing that respect between adults should be built on mutual regard rather than seniority. In his view, holding onto traditional seniority structures in relationships between two responsible adults can come off as authoritarian, not respectful.
This public statement has spurred conversation on social media, with many questioning the cultural expectations surrounding respect and seniority. Kanayo has yet to respond, but the criticism has added to ongoing debates about the changing dynamics of respect, seniority, and personal responsibility in Nigerian society.
