The Nigerian House of Representatives has called on the government to enhance security for transmission towers in Rivers and Bayelsa. Learn about the push for increased protection in these regions.
The House of Representatives has urged the Federal Government, through the Ministry of Interior, to promptly enhance security measures for Transmission Towers nationwide to prevent future vandalism incidents.
This resolution followed the adoption of a motion highlighting the urgent need for such security, presented by Oboku Oforji during a plenary session on Tuesday.
Oforji recounted that on July 29, 2024, residents of Yenagoa and the broader Bayelsa State experienced a complete power outage due to the collapse of a Transmission Station in Rivers State, alongside other failures in the region.
He noted that the Bayelsa State Government, in partnership with the Transmission Company of Nigeria, acted quickly to mitigate the resulting socio-economic impacts.
However, he expressed concern over a vandalism incident on November 19, 2024, in Ahoada East LGA, which occurred just as repair efforts were nearing completion.
While commending the Bayelsa State Government’s financial and material support for the Transmission Company, Oforji emphasized the necessity of implementing proactive measures to prevent future vandalism, invoking the economic and social rights outlined in Chapter II of the 1999 Constitution of Nigeria.
The House consequently called upon the Federal Government, via the Ministry of Interior, to promptly enhance security measures for the Transmission Towers nationwide to prevent future acts of vandalism.
Additionally, it instructed the Committees on Interior and Power to oversee adherence to this directive.
