Former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has voiced support for Nigerian nurses who are considering moving abroad for better opportunities. Speaking to students of the College of Nursing Sciences in Adazi-Nnukwu over the weekend, Obi emphasized the importance of pursuing goals, even if it means going overseas.
“I have always told the Nursing Council not to restrict you people from travelling abroad after graduation,” Obi remarked. “If it’s not going to work for you here, go to where it will work for you. We won’t advise anyone to stay where it’s difficult.”
Obi shared a personal example, mentioning his former Personal Assistant, Michael-Jude, who recently moved to the UK with his wife, a nurse. “The UK government granted his wife and her husband all rights to study, and he is now in the UK,” Obi said, humorously adding that he’s now on the hunt for a new PA.
Obi expressed hope that once Nigeria improves, professionals abroad will be inspired to return home. He stated, “I’m sure that when we build a greater Nigeria, you will come back.”
The Labour Party leader’s open endorsement of professionals seeking greener pastures speaks to the current challenges faced by many in Nigeria. His words have resonated, raising awareness about the need for structural improvements in healthcare and job opportunities within the country.
