It’s disheartening to see some attempt to undermine the monumental achievements of former President Olusegun Obasanjo. While he had his flaws, incompetence was certainly not one of them. Obasanjo’s legacy is marked by remarkable feats that shaped Nigeria’s trajectory, and his efforts to elevate the middle class are irrefutable.
Under his leadership, teachers were able to buy cars, the middle class flourished, and the Nigerian economy soared to become one of the fastest-growing globally. Celebrities returned home, and sectors like Nollywood and Afrobeats gained international acclaim. But under the current administration, many Nigerians, including professionals in banking, law, medicine, and engineering, are struggling to afford basic luxuries.
Obasanjo made bold strides to modernize Nigeria’s foreign policy, making the country a key player on the global stage. His administration introduced groundbreaking reforms in banking, telecommunications, and the economy, while creating institutions like the EFCC, ICPC, and NDDC. These institutions have left an indelible mark on Nigeria’s governance.
His leadership was also defined by merit-based appointments, giving rise to technocrats like Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Dora Akunyili, and Chukwuma Soludo, whose expertise helped propel Nigeria forward. Obasanjo’s work created an environment where Nigerians were proud to carry their green passport, and the world took notice.
The political and economic reforms of his time laid a clear path for growth and business development, which seems to have stagnated under the present regime. Those who dismiss Obasanjo’s impact fail to acknowledge the powerful foundation he laid. His vision for a prosperous Nigeria remains unmatched.
The task now is to recognize those who can continue his work—leaders like Peter Obi, who promises to reignite the economic spirit of Obasanjo’s era. As we look toward the future, Obasanjo’s record stands as a testament to what Nigeria is capable of when led by visionaries, not puppets.
