Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo has urged for the dismissal of the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) along with other significant officials, advocating for a comprehensive reform of the electoral institution.
During his address at the Chinua Achebe Leadership Forum at Yale University, Obasanjo characterized the 2023 general elections as a “disaster” and stressed the necessity of restoring public confidence in Nigeria’s electoral framework.
He contended that the electoral process requires significant improvements to guarantee fairness and transparency.
Additionally, Obasanjo proposed shortening the terms of the INEC Chairman and other senior officials to mitigate the risk of partisan appointments within the commission.
He emphasized the urgent need for thorough vetting of the INEC leadership and called for the establishment of a new, credible leadership across all levels of government to combat political influence and corruption, thereby rebuilding citizens’ trust in the electoral system.
