Nigeria officially qualifies for the 2025 AFCON following Rwanda’s defeat. Learn how this outcome advances Nigeria’s goals in African football.
Nigeria has secured its qualification for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament in Morocco with two matches remaining.
The Super Eagles were preparing to face Benin Republic in Abidjan on Thursday, needing only to avoid defeat to confirm their participation in the upcoming continental event.
However, their qualification was assured prior to the match due to Rwanda’s surprising 1-0 loss to Libya at Stade Amahoro in Kigali, which guaranteed Nigeria’s place in the 35th edition of AFCON.
Rwanda, currently ranked third in Group D behind Nigeria and Benin, has accumulated five points from five matches.
Even with their upcoming match against the Super Eagles on Monday in Uyo, Rwanda cannot exceed Nigeria’s total of ten points, regardless of the outcomes of Nigeria’s remaining games.
This accomplishment marks the Super Eagles as the 11th team to qualify for the Morocco 2025 tournament, joining the ranks of Morocco, Burkina Faso, Algeria, DR Congo, Cote d’Ivoire, Senegal, Equatorial Guinea, Egypt, Cameroon, and Angola.
The tournament is set to take place from December 21, 2025, to January 18, 2026, where Nigeria will seek to improve upon its runner-up finish to Cote d’Ivoire in the previous edition held earlier this year.
