In a significant operation, the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has uncovered a warehouse in Oke-Afa, Okota, Lagos, stocked with expired and unregistered supermarket products. The discovery, made during a raid prompted by intelligence, highlights alarming health risks posed by these unregulated items.
NAFDAC officials found over 14 rooms packed with unregistered and expired goods, including contaminated products. The facility also housed a 20ft container of unregistered carbonated drinks. Poor storage conditions, evidenced by rat infestations, worsened the situation.
The warehouse has been placed on hold, and all operations suspended as NAFDAC investigates further. The agency has summoned the management to present sourcing evidence, including the Global Listing for Supermarket Items (GLSI) certificate.
NAFDAC issued a strong warning about the dangers of consuming unregulated products, especially as the festive season approaches. The agency emphasized the importance of consumer vigilance, urging Nigerians to verify product sources and promptly report suspicious activities.
Dr. Monica Eimunjeze, Acting Director-General of NAFDAC, stated, “This raid underscores our commitment to protecting public health. We will ensure that offenders face the full weight of the law.”
Consumers are advised to check for proper NAFDAC registration numbers and avoid expired products, which can lead to severe health complications.
