South African star Tyla takes center stage at the 2024 MTV EMAs, as Nigerian artists face unexpected snubs.
South African artist Tyla made a remarkable impact at the 30th MTV Europe Music Awards held in Manchester, United Kingdom, on Sunday, where she secured three prestigious awards.
She triumphed over notable Nigerian artists such as Asake, Tems, Rema, Burna Boy, and Ayra Starr to claim the Best Afrobeats Artist title.
Additionally, she earned the Best African Act award, surpassing competitors including Ayra Starr, Asake, DBN Gogo, TitoM & Yuppe, and Diamond Platnumz.
Her third accolade of the evening was for Best R&B Artist, where she outperformed American icons Kehlani, SZA, Tinashe, Usher, and Victoria MonΓ©t.
Tyla concluded the evening with an acoustic rendition of her popular track βWater.β In contrast, Nigerian singer Ayra Starr did not secure any wins from her four nominations, which included Best African Act, Best New Artist, Best Afrobeats Artist, and Best Push.
Earlier this year, Tyla also made headlines by winning the inaugural Best African Music Performance category at the Grammys, as well as the Best Afrobeats Artist award at the 2024 MTV Music Video Awards, again outshining Nigerian contenders.
