A 42-year-old father of five in Terengganu, Malaysia, was convicted of khalwat (close proximity between unmarried persons) for the third time and sentenced to six strokes of the cane and a fine by a Sharia court.
-The caning is scheduled to take place publicly at a mosque on December 6 after Friday prayers, marking the first such public execution of punishment for khalwat under recent amendments to the state’s Islamic laws.
-Terengganu amended its Islamic laws this year to allow public execution of punishments, unlike the previous practice of conducting such sentences in private settings.
-Malaysia operates under a dual-track legal system combining secular and Islamic laws. Caning is used for various offences but excludes groups such as women, men over 50, and those sentenced to death.
-Terengganu, governed by the Parti Islam Se-Malaysia (PAS), has implemented stricter Islamic laws. In 2018, the state publicly caned two women for attempting lesbian sex, an act that drew global criticism.
