The McDonald’s listeria outbreak has now been linked to 104 illnesses, with the pathogen traced back to slivered onions used in the chain’s Quarter Pounders. The onions, supplied by Taylor Farms, were contaminated, leading to one death and 34 hospitalizations among the affected individuals. McDonald’s took action by temporarily removing the Quarter Pounder from its menu in several states before returning it without the tainted onions. The supplier has since issued a recall for its yellow onions, and McDonald’s switched to another supplier for the affected region.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) confirmed that the recalled onions are past their shelf life, but the investigation remains ongoing to assess any further illnesses. Listeria is concerning due to its delayed symptoms, which can take weeks to appear.
As such, health officials continue to urge those who have consumed the affected burgers to report any symptoms, which include fever, headaches, and gastrointestinal distress. Those with weaker immune systems, including the elderly, young children, and pregnant women, are at higher risk of severe complications.
