Nigerian troops intensify their onslaught in Kebbi, forcing Lakurawa members to flee. Get insights into this major crackdown on insurgent activity.
Members of the Lakurawa armed group are retreating as military forces intensify coordinated ground and air assaults on their camps in Kebbi and Sokoto states.
This escalation follows a deadly attack by the Lakurawa group on the Mera community in the Augie Local Government Area of Kebbi State, resulting in 17 fatalities, prompting the army to deploy additional troops to the region.
Upon their arrival in Birnin Kebbi, the soldiers, as reported by Abdullahi Idris Zuru, the media aide to the Kebbi governor, conferred with Deputy Governor Abubakar Umar Tafida before advancing to Mera.
Zuru noted that the troops successfully dislodged the bandits and recovered numerous cattle that had been stolen during the attack.
This military action was initiated after Kebbi State Governor Dr. Nasir Idris urgently requested federal assistance to combat the rising violence from armed groups that threaten rural communities.
Zuru emphasized the governor’s commitment to protecting the lives and property of Kebbi State residents, which led to his appeal for federal intervention in counter-terrorism efforts.
In a related development, National Security Adviser Mallam Nuhu Ribadu has assured that the Lakurawa armed group, which has been terrorizing Northwestern states, will be eradicated from Nigeria.
