The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, has announced that legislation is being developed to address the inequality and discrimination faced by holders of Higher National Diplomas (HND) from polytechnics compared to Bachelor’s Degree (BSc) holders from universities.
This announcement was made during the 36th convocation ceremony of Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH) in Lagos, where Abbas was represented by Hon. Fuad Kayode Laguda, a member of the House from Lagos State, who received recognition as a Fellow of the College.
Abbas emphasized the significance of education and the benefits of promoting vocational and technical training, stating that the nation requires skilled individuals to enhance its technological standing.
He indicated that efforts are underway to establish a legal framework that would eliminate the disparity between HND and BSc qualifications, advocating for equal opportunities for all.
He also encouraged graduates to take advantage of available opportunities to make a meaningful contribution to society.
Additionally, Nigeria’s First Lady, Mrs. Remi Tinubu, who was also honored with a Fellowship, reaffirmed her dedication to education by announcing a N50 million Endowment Fund aimed at supporting the top female graduates.
She highlighted the importance of empowering girls through education and removing obstacles to their success, reflecting on her commitment to improving the lives of the youth, who represent the future of the nation.
In a speech delivered on behalf of President Bola Tinubu by Dr. Suwaiba Said Ahmed, the Minister of State for Education, the President emphasized the progress made by his administration in enhancing the education sector.
He highlighted key initiatives, including the Student Loan Scheme and the NEEDS Assessment for higher education institutions, urging graduates to serve as exemplary representatives of their schools.
Dr. Ibraheem Abdul, the Rector of YABATECH, reflected on the institution’s 77-year legacy of excellence and called for support from both individuals and corporate bodies to improve campus facilities.
Additionally, Prof. Funso Afolabi, Chairman of the Governing Council, commended the college management for their accomplishments since taking office.
