Since assuming office in 2019, Governor Abdullahi Sule has shown commendable leadership and dedication to the development of Nasarawa State. His administration has been marked by significant strides in various sectors, particularly in healthcare.
Recognizing the critical need for accessible and quality healthcare, Governor Sule has demonstrated foresight by establishing four new General Hospitals: Azara, Assakio, New Karu, and Gudi. His personal commitment to these projects underscores his dedication to improving the lives of the people in Nasarawa State.
The establishment of General Hospital Gudi in July 2023 was a particularly celebrated milestone. Located in the Rinze Development Area of Akwanga Local Government, this facility, situated in the Governorโs immediate community was expected to serve as a beacon of improved healthcare delivery. The Governorโs proactive measures, including personally overseeing the staffing and equipping of these hospitals, further highlighted his commitment to this cause.
However, one year later, the General Hospital Gudi remains inactive, with no healthcare services being provided to the community. Despite its potential to transform healthcare access in the region, the hospital lies dormant, raising significant concerns and questions about the reasons behind this inaction and the impact on the local population.
โข The Impact On The Community
Healthcare is a fundamental human right, and the establishment of General Hospital Gudi was a step towards ensuring that right for the residents of Rinze and surrounding areas. The absence of functional healthcare services in the hospital means that many individuals are left without access to essential medical care. This gap in service not only endangers lives but also places undue strain on other healthcare facilities in the region, which may already be overwhelmed.
โข Accountability And Action
The community’s patience is waning, and rightly so. The Governor’s commitment to healthcare was demonstrated through the establishment of this hospital, but commitment must translate into action. The state government needs to address the following:
โข Operational Readiness
Identify and resolve any logistical, staffing or equipment issues preventing the hospital from becoming operational.
โข Transparency
Communicate with the public regarding the delays and steps being taken to ensure the hospital opens as soon as possible.
โข Community Engagement
Involve local leaders and residents in the process to build trust and ensure the hospital meets the communityโs needs.
โข Conclusion
The promise of General Hospital Gudi must not become another unfulfilled dream. The people of Rinze Development Area and Akwanga Local Government deserve access to quality healthcare, as was envisioned by the establishment of this facility. It is imperative for the state government, under the leadership of Governor Abdullah Sule, to take immediate action to operationalize the hospital and deliver on the promise made to its citizens.
The clock is ticking, and every day without a functional hospital is a day of missed opportunities for saving lives and improving the well-being of the community. The time for action is now!
