Gospel artist Sinach faces a N5bn lawsuit for alleged copyright infringement of her globally acclaimed song, ‘Way Maker.’
The Federal High Court in Lagos has postponed the copyright infringement case brought against gospel artist Sinach by music producer Michael Oluwole until January 2025.
Oluwole, known as Maye, has initiated a lawsuit claiming N5 billion in damages related to Sinach’s 2016 song “Way Maker.”
In case number FHC/L/CS/402/2024, he seeks a court declaration affirming his status as a co-author and co-owner of the song.
Additionally, he demands N5 billion in general damages for alleged violations of his rights and requests an equitable sharing of any fees generated from copyright licenses or assignments in the absence of a written agreement.
The plaintiff also seeks the court’s determination on the fair division of fees, an order for the defendant to disclose all related licenses and assignments, and a declaration that Sinach failed to fulfill her legal obligations regarding written agreements for his contributions.
Furthermore, he requests a permanent injunction to prevent Sinach from reproducing, distributing, or publicly performing “Way Maker” or any adaptations thereof.
