Global ratings highlight progress in Nigeria’s aviation sector, boosting trust among operators. Find out what’s driving the change.”
Stakeholders within the aviation sector have praised Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, for the recent enhancement of Nigeria’s global aviation rating, which they believe has significantly bolstered the confidence of airline operators in the nation’s air transport industry.
OBASANJONEWS Reports indicate that Nigeria has been removed from the global aviation watchlist following an increase in its aviation rating to 75.5 percent, a notable rise from 49 percent to 70.5 percent after the Federal Government endorsed the Cape Town Convention Practice Direction in September 2024.
This improved rating enables Nigerian airlines to access dry lease aircraft, thereby augmenting their operational capabilities.
In response to these developments, stakeholders, represented by the Good Governance Advocates of Nigeria (GGAN), expressed their appreciation for President Bola Tinubu’s administration for enhancing Nigeria’s global aviation compliance score.
During a press conference in Abuja, GGAN’s Executive Director, Dr. Opialu Fabian, emphasized that operators now possess greater confidence in the aviation sector, fostering a conducive environment for business growth.
GGAN further highlighted the remarkable progress made in the aviation sector over the past year under Minister Keyamo’s leadership, attributing this turnaround to his focused approach and intentional reforms that have promoted trade and economic development.
They also acknowledged the minister’s proactive engagement with aviation stakeholders, which has ensured inclusivity and adherence to international best practices, while noting that the Tinubu administration’s dedication to safety has reinforced Nigeria’s compliance with global standards.
The GGAN highlighted that the Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development has made substantial advancements in safety protocols, receiving commendations from international organizations.
Fabian emphasized that the implementation of the Cape Town Convention reflects the Nigerian government’s commitment to aligning aircraft financing and leasing practices with global standards.
This progress is consistent with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which prioritizes infrastructure development, economic diversification, and fostering international collaborations.
GGAN also pointed out that under Keyamo’s leadership, the Ministry is prioritizing human capital development by funding training initiatives that enhance the skills of aviation personnel through global partnerships.
Fabian remarked that the honorable minister has accomplished more than just operational and infrastructural improvements, particularly noting his focus on human capital development.
This approach ensures that the reforms are sustainable and prepares the industry to face new challenges with skilled professionals.
Furthermore, Mr. Keyamo’s commitment to fostering diverse international partnerships has opened new opportunities for Nigeria.
His strategic vision in formulating effective policies and reforms has bolstered the industry’s global standing and attracted foreign direct investment by strengthening ties with international aviation bodies and financiers.
Notably, the Minister’s emphasis on transparency and accountability in aviation resource management has restored public confidence, effectively closing the chapter on previous issues of mismanagement and fund misappropriation.
To promote sustainability and equity within the sector, Mr. Keyamo secured approval from the Federal Executive Council (FEC) to revoke the ticket payment exemption previously granted to high-ranking Nigerians in the national air travel system.
Despite the presence of minor challenges, including operating expenses, insufficient infrastructure, and regulatory obstacles, we remain confident that these issues will be effectively addressed through the minister’s thorough reform strategy.
The significant progress in the aviation sector can be attributed to the innovative leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The achievements in this field have been facilitated by the support and policy direction provided by the administration under President Tinubu.
