The Federal Government plans to deploy more military personnel and establish additional military formations in states affected by the Lakurawa sect, including Sokoto, Kebbi, Niger, and Kaduna, in response to rising terrorist activity.
-The Lakurawa sect, previously operating in Sokoto and Kebbi, has extended its activities into Niger State (North Central Nigeria) and Kaduna State, raising concerns about the growing spread of their operations. The Sokoto State government is taking proactive steps, including providing air support infrastructure, establishing Forward Operation Bases, and enhancing surveillance systems to combat the sect’s activities.
-Sokoto has strengthened partnerships with federal security agencies, launched public awareness campaigns, and empowered local security outfits, such as the Sokoto State Community Guards, to support the fight against the Lakurawa sect.
-The Minister of Defence, Muhammad Abubakar, reassured citizens of Sokoto and Kebbi that the armed forces are committed to dismantling the Lakurawa sect and ensuring the security of the region.
-The military has successfully dislodged the Lakurawa sect from its hideout, recovering cattle and forcing the group to flee due to airstrikes and ground troop efforts, according to the Defence Minister. States like Niger, Kaduna, and Kebbi are working together with the Federal Government to eliminate the Lakurawa sect, acknowledging the need for joint action to combat the group’s spread across state borders.
-The Kebbi State Government is providing logistical support to troops and local vigilantes, including vehicles and operational assistance, to help strengthen the fight against the Lakurawa sect and prevent future attacks. District heads in affected areas are advocating for a dialogue approach to resolve the issue peacefully, while also calling for more permanent security forces and improved intelligence-gathering to ensure long-term peace.
-Following the deployment of troops, the Mera community in Kebbi has seen improved security, with farmers able to access their land again. However, the community is urging the government not to withdraw security forces prematurely, fearing the return of the Lakurawa sect.
