Ladi Adebutu, the candidate representing the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2023 Ogun State governorship election, has been apprehended and is currently in custody of the Department of State Services (DSS), as confirmed by the party.
Kayode Adebayo, the PDP Publicity Secretary in Ogun State, announced this development in a statement released in Abeokuta on Monday.
Adebayo indicated that Adebutu was summoned by the DSS for interrogation regarding alleged disruptions during the local government elections that took place on November 16, 2024.
While the party has not elaborated on the specific allegations, Adebutu’s detention has ignited conversations among political figures in the region.
The PDP has emphasized the need for transparency in the investigation and has urged the authorities to adhere to due process.
Adebayo stated that the party leader has indeed been detained by the DSS for unspecified charges, but he has called for calm among party members, assuring them that this situation is a challenge that can be overcome in the pursuit of democracy.
Efforts to secure Adebutu’s release, either through personal recognition or a surety, have not been successful as of 10 PM on November 18, 2024, and his legal team has been notified to address the matter the following morning.
The party aims to keep the public informed about Adebutu’s situation and encourages maintaining peace until the issue is resolved.
