Residents of Saki, Oyo State, particularly those near Almusharaf Hospital in Oke Sunah, are gripped with fear following the sudden deaths of a doctor and three nurses in just 72 hours. The deaths began with a nurse three days ago, followed by another nurse on Monday, and then a doctor along with another nurse on Tuesday.
Locals are alarmed and speculating about the cause, with some suggesting the possibility of a contagious disease that may have been mishandled by the hospital staff, though no patients have been affected. Others have raised concerns about potential food poisoning, as the hospital staff may have shared a meal.
One resident, Mr. Adekunle Lawal, voiced the community’s unease, stating, “We are afraid because we don’t know what caused their deaths. It’s a very big hospital, and sometimes they invite doctors from other places.”
The deaths have led to calls for an investigation, with locals urging the Ministry of Health and other relevant authorities to step in and conduct autopsies to determine the exact cause. Another resident, legal practitioner Mr. Adeola Fehintola, also emphasized the need for urgent action, citing the town’s proximity to the border, which could expose it to the risk of contagious diseases.
All four victims have been buried according to Islamic rites, and the community awaits answers.
