Nigerian Customs intercepts smuggled goods valued at N3.32 billion at Lagos Airport. Discover details of this major operation.
The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) at Murtala Muhammed Airport Command reported the interception of 250 live turtles, Canadian Cannabis Sativa, and military equipment valued at over N3.32 billion within the past three months.
Area Controller Micheal Awe indicated that the command generated N144.2 billion from January to October this year, a significant increase from the N74.28 billion recorded during the same timeframe in 2023.
The contraband, imported from Canada and Turkiye among other countries, included various military items such as 23 walkie-talkies, 175 military helmets, and 50 drones, as well as narcotics and wildlife products.
Awe emphasized that the command’s efforts against illicit trade resulted in a total Duty Paid Value (DPV) of seized items amounting to N3.32 billion, which violated provisions of the Nigeria Customs Service Act (NCS Act) 2023.
He also highlighted a 94 percent increase in import duties, attributing this growth to improved trade facilitation, stakeholder compliance, effective law enforcement, and strategic resource management.
