The Federal High Court in Enugu, presided over by Justice Mohammed Garba Umar, has denied a bail application for Blessing Amaka David-Agwa, an alleged fake fertility nurse accused of defrauding women of over N28 million. David-Agwa is facing 45 counts of charges, including impersonation, forgery, and obtaining by false pretenses.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Enugu Zonal Office is prosecuting the case, alleging that David-Agwa forged certificates from the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria and the University of Nigeria, Nsukka to present herself as a fertility expert. Investigations revealed that she allegedly defrauded 45 women with false promises of assisting them in conceiving.
Her lawyer, G.C. Madubuegwu, sought bail under the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, citing liberal terms. However, EFCC counsel Blessing N. Obasi opposed the motion, emphasizing the severe psychological impact on the victims.
In his ruling, Justice Umar stated that the defense had not provided sufficient grounds for bail, ordering an accelerated trial to ensure swift justice.
The charges include incidents where the defendant allegedly collected sums such as N1.6 million from one Okenwa Joy Chiamaka and N1.25 million from Amarachi Okpala under fraudulent claims of being a specialized fertility nurse.
The court adjourned the trial to November 21, 2024, for further proceedings.
