A gastroenteritis (cholera) outbreak has claimed 25 lives in three local government areas of Sokoto State, with 1,160 cases reported.
Currently, 15 active cholera cases are being treated in Sokoto North, Silame, and Kware local government areas, with laboratory confirmation of the infection.
The state government, in collaboration with rescue teams, is actively managing the outbreak to prevent further spread. The state has begun distributing free medication to 18 local government areas to contain the disease.
Authorities are continuing efforts to treat affected individuals and curb the cholera outbreak across the state.
Sokoto State’s health sector faces challenges such as dilapidated infrastructure, inadequate resources, and power outages, which have hindered progress for the past eight years.
A significant turnout of women, especially pregnant women, is seeking medical consultations and pregnancy tests at health institutions in the state.
The state government has recruited 864 nurses and midwives to address the shortage of healthcare workers, with plans to recruit more staff to replace retirees and deceased workers. The ongoing cholera outbreak has affected communities like Bazza and Gidadawa in Sokoto, with several deaths and ongoing treatments at local health centers.
The commissioner expressed hope that Governor Ahmad Aliyu will prioritize revitalizing the stateās health sector, ensuring better conditions and services for patients.
