In a shocking development, Brazilian police have arrested four soldiers and a police officer in connection with an alleged 2022 assassination plot against President-elect Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. The arrests, which occurred on November 19, 2024, in Rio de Janeiro, were made while the individuals were involved in providing security for the G20 summit, which is being attended by world leaders including US President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping.
The detained individuals are accused of plotting to assassinate Lula, his vice-presidential candidate, and a Supreme Court justice in an attempt to prevent Lula from assuming office after his election victory in 2022. The group, which reportedly had military training, had code-named their conspiracy “Green and Yellow Dagger”, referencing the colors of the Brazilian flag. Their plan also involved creating a “crisis cabinet” following the killings.
Brazilian authorities have described the arrests as part of efforts to dismantle a criminal organization responsible for planning a violent coup attempt. The suspects now face serious charges, including coup-plotting, attempting to overthrow the government, and being part of a criminal organization.
This arrest comes shortly after a failed bombing attempt on the Brazilian Supreme Court, believed to be linked to far-right extremism, and adds to the ongoing investigations surrounding the January 2023 insurrection in BrasĂlia, where supporters of former President Jair Bolsonaro stormed government buildings to prevent Lula’s inauguration.
