A bill to amend the Nigerian Constitution and grant Nigerians living abroad the right to vote in future elections has successfully passed its second reading in the House of Representatives on November 20.
The bill, co-sponsored by Speaker Abbas Tajudeen and Representative Sodeeq Abdullahi, seeks to amend the 2022 Electoral Act, creating a pathway for Nigerians in the diaspora to actively participate in the country’s democratic process.
Having initially passed its second reading in July, the bill has now been referred to the Committee on Electoral Matters for further consideration, before moving to the Constitution Amendment Committee for additional action.
If passed into law, this amendment would mark a significant step towards greater inclusion, allowing millions of Nigerians abroad to have a say in the elections that shape their home country’s future.
