On November 10, 2024, Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede, Acting Chief of Army Staff (Ag COAS), commenced his maiden operational tour in Sokoto State, focusing on the security situation within the 8 Division’s Area of Responsibility. During his visit to Forward Operations Base Tangaza and 248 Battalion in Illela, Lt Gen Oluyede received detailed briefings from Brigadier General Ibikunle Ajose, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 8 Division.
In his address to the troops, Lt Gen Oluyede commended their resilience and sacrifices in the ongoing fight against terrorism and insurgency in Nigeria’s North West region. He emphasized that his tour aims to gather firsthand insights into the challenges they face, assuring them of his unwavering support while urging vigilance and commitment to their mission.
Highlighting the importance of collaboration between the military and local communities, Lt Gen Oluyede called for public cooperation in providing reliable intelligence to assist army efforts. “The Nigerian Army belongs to the people,” he stated, underscoring that local support is crucial to achieving sustainable peace. Engaging with Hon. Bashir Salihu, Chairman of Tangaza Local Government Area, alongside traditional leaders and other security heads in Illela, the Ag COAS reiterated the need for united efforts in safeguarding Nigeria.
