The National Examinations Council (NECO) has announced that it has fully paid allowances to all 72,138 examiners it engaged as ad-hoc staff for the 2024 Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE).
In response to recent speculations claiming the council deliberately withheld examiners’ payments, NECO clarified that it encountered some delays due to incorrect bank details submitted by certain examiners, which temporarily affected the payment process.
In a statement released on Wednesday by the Acting Director of Information and Public Relations, Azeez Sani, NECO explained that it began paying examiners on October 4, 2024, following a structured bank-by-bank schedule to streamline reconciliation and avoid complications.
“NECO has completed payment of examiners’ allowances as of today, Wednesday, November 13, 2024, in accordance with the council’s payment plan,” the statement read.
The council further noted that payment issues arose due to incorrect bank details submitted by some examiners, which have since been resolved. All 24 banks involved in the payment process have now been cleared.
NECO described the rumors circulating on social media, alleging deliberate non-payment of examiners, as “incorrect and false.”
The statement advised, “Any personnel engaged by the council should seek clarification directly from NECO on any issues before resorting to the media.”
NECO also reassured its examiners and ad-hoc staff, emphasizing that their contributions are highly valued and promising that timely remuneration will always be a priority.
