President Joe Biden will visit Lima, Peru, and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil later this month to attend two major international summits.
From November 14-16, he will participate in the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit and hold a bilateral meeting with Peruvian President Dina Boluarte. Following that, Biden will head to Brazil for the G20 Summit from November 17-19, where he is expected to meet with Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and visit the Amazon rainforest in Manaus.
Biden will be the first sitting U.S. president to engage with local and Indigenous communities there and those working to protect the environment.
During the G20 Summit, Biden will emphasize the U.S.’s commitment to developing countries and lead efforts to address shared global challenges such as hunger, poverty, climate change, health threats, and debt burdens in developing nations.
The White House also highlighted Biden’s recent phone conversation with Lula, where the two leaders discussed the upcoming G20 and the progress Brazil has made in improving workers’ rights and fighting hunger.
Biden expressed well wishes for Lula’s recovery from a recent injury, and both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to staying in close contact on regional and global issues.
