On Friday, the Israeli government ordered two planes to be sent to Amsterdam to rescue citizens after violent clashes broke out between locals and Israelis following a soccer match.
The violence occurred after Maccabi Tel Aviv FC played Ajax FC in a Europa League match on Thursday night, with Ajax defeating Maccabi 5-0. The Israeli Foreign Ministry reported that hundreds of Maccabi supporters were “ambushed and brutally attacked,” with mobs chanting anti-Israel slogans and sharing videos of the violence on social media. The attacks included kicking, beating, and even running over Israeli citizens.
In response to the violence, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered the deployment of rescue planes to bring citizens back to Israel.
The Israel Defense Forces confirmed the mission. Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof spoke with Netanyahu, assuring him that the perpetrators would be identified and prosecuted.
Schoof also stated that the situation in Amsterdam had returned to calm. Dutch police arrested 57 individuals in connection with the attacks, which occurred near the Johan Cruijff Arena, where the match had taken place.
