The newly appointed Osun State Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Igbalawole Sotiyo, has voiced his concern over the recent assault on an NSCDC officer by police personnel in Osogbo. He emphasized that conflicts between agencies should be addressed by higher authorities to maintain peace and that public servants are bound by the Public Service Rules, which prohibit physical violence.
Sotiyo made these remarks during a courtesy visit to the Assistant Inspector General (AIG) of Police, Zone 11, Patrick Ogong Edung, in Osogbo. He stressed the need for cooperation between security agencies and urged that such conflicts be resolved professionally.
In response, AIG Edung condemned the incident, calling it a “public disgrace,” and pledged an impartial investigation, as instructed by the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun. He also highlighted the importance of inter-agency collaboration, acknowledging that security challenges require collective efforts rather than isolated actions.
The altercation occurred in late October 2024, when NSCDC personnel allegedly stopped police officers from making an arrest in Osogbo. The incident led to claims that NSCDC operatives assaulted two police officers and damaged their patrol vehicle, while the NSCDC countered that the police officers were in civilian attire and could not be properly identified.
