Eighteen political parties in Ondo State, South West Nigeria, have signed a Peace Accord to ensure a peaceful gubernatorial election, pledging to respect the election results as long as they are free and fair.
This accord represents a major step toward a violence-free election.
General Abdulsalam Abubakar, Chair of the National Peace Committee, urged all candidates and parties to uphold democratic values and avoid vote-buying, stressing the importance of maintaining Nigeria’s current peaceful environment.
In his message, INEC Chairman Professor Mahmood Yakubu reported no security issues so far, expressed hope for sustained peace, and promised enhanced logistics on election day, urging all parties to honor the peace accord.
The Inspector General of Police, represented by AIG Sylvester Abiodun, announced that over 36,000 officers would be deployed across Ondo’s 18 local government areas, supported by additional security personnel, totaling 43,157.
Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa praised the National Peace Committee’s efforts and committed to supporting the peace accord and upholding democracy. He urged all parties to follow suit to maintain a peaceful environment during and after the election.
This peace accord marks a key initiative toward ensuring a safe and orderly election in Nigeria, building on previous successes in curbing election violence.
