The legal team representing Stephen Abuwatseya, the Abuja Bolt driver who was assaulted by Alex Ikwechegh, a member of the House of Representatives from Abia State, has announced their withdrawal from the case.
Deji Adeyanju and Partners, the law firm involved, stated that the decision to withdraw was made to preserve the firmâs professional integrity and uphold the highest ethical standards within the legal profession.
The assault incident occurred when Abuwatseya, while delivering food, was attacked at Ikwecheghâs residence in the Maitama area of Abuja. Following the assault, the lawmaker was arraigned at a Kuje Magistrate Court but was later granted bail.
In a surprising turn of events, Abuwatseya publicly apologized to Ikwechegh on Thursday and called for unity among Nigerians.
In a statement issued by the law firm and signed by Zainab Ortega, they clarified the reasons for their decision:
âWe wish to formally announce the withdrawal of our legal representation in the case involving the alleged assault of Mr. Stephen Abuwatseye. On October 28, 2024, Mr. Abuwatseya came to our firm seeking redress for an assault he claimed to have suffered. After verifying his account, we decided to take up his case pro bono and successfully ensured the arraignment of the accused.
âHowever, given the recent developments and after thorough reflection, we have decided to step back in order to maintain our professional integrity and adhere to the ethical standards expected in our field.
âWe wish Mr. Abuwatseya all the best and continue to stand committed to defending the rights of the oppressed and vulnerable members of society,â the statement read.
