The Abia State government has arrested several civil servants implicated in various pension fraud schemes, with plans to bring them to court shortly.
Additionally, some individuals identified as pension fraudsters residing abroad will be repatriated to face legal action domestically.
Governor Alex Otti made this announcement during a press briefing at Government House Umuahia, emphasizing his administration’s firm stance against corruption.
He indicated that the suspects would be arraigned in the coming days and criticized those defending one of the arrested individuals, suggesting that such defense implies complicity in theft.
Otti mentioned that approximately ten or eleven suspects are involved, with some located outside the country.
Regarding the relocation of Abia State University’s Umuahia campus back to its main campus in Uturu, the Governor affirmed that this decision would remain unchanged despite student protests, asserting it serves the students’ best interests.
He promised that adequate accommodations, water, and modern facilities would be established in Uturu. On the issue of ongoing power outages in Ohafia, Otti highlighted the recent establishment of the Greater Ohafia Development Authority, aimed at transforming the region and addressing local needs.
He also instructed the State’s Commissioner for Finance and the Accountant General to resolve salary payment discrepancies reported by some civil servants.
