The Lagos State Police Command has confirmed that it has seized three dogs believed to be responsible for the death of a security guard in Pinnock Estate, Ilasan, Lekki, on November 5, 2024. The identity of the deceased security guard remains unknown.
In addition to confiscating the dogs, the police have arrested their owner, Salisu Mustapha, in connection with the incident.
Police spokesperson, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, shared the update in a statement issued on Wednesday. He confirmed that the dogs are currently in police custody, where they are being well cared for to ensure that animal rights are upheld.
“Following the tragic mauling of a security guard by three dogs in Pinnock Estate, Ilasan, Lekki, on Tuesday, November 5, 2024, the Lagos State Police Command has arrested the dogs’ owner, Salisu Mustapha, and taken the dogs into custody. A thorough investigation is underway,” the statement read.
Hundeyin further assured residents of Pinnock Estate and the wider Lagos community that the investigation will be conducted to its conclusion and that justice will be served.
Addressing concerns about the treatment of the seized dogs, Hundeyin clarified on social media, saying, “The dogs are receiving proper care. We do not tolerate cruelty to animals. These are the dogs at the command headquarters before being transferred to a more appropriate facility.”
He also responded to a user, @Arojinle, who questioned whether the dogs were responsible for the death, stating, “I won’t post graphic images of the victim’s injuries, but the investigation is ongoing.”
Earlier reports revealed that a viral video showed the Boerboel dogs approaching the lifeless body of the security guard. The video, shared by user @itzbasito on X (formerly Twitter), suggested that the dogs were allowed to roam freely by their owner, which led to the fatal attack.
The case continues to develop as the police conduct further investigations.
