In tribute to the late Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has announced the cancellation of all non-essential personal and social engagements for the next two days.
This follows the confirmation of General Lagbaja’s death by the presidency on Wednesday morning. The army chief had been absent for some time due to an undisclosed illness.
A statement from the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, expressed deep sorrow over the passing of General Lagbaja, highlighting his steadfast commitment to combating insurgency, armed banditry, and violent extremism throughout his career.
The statement reads:
*“The Nigeria Police Force is profoundly saddened by the sudden death of Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja on November 5, 2024. In honor of his service, the Inspector General of Police has canceled all non-essential personal and social engagements, as well as non-urgent commitments, for the next two days.”
It continued:
General Lagbaja was widely respected for his tireless efforts in safeguarding the nation from various security threats. His unwavering dedication to the Nigerian Army and the country earned him widespread admiration. The IGP’s decision reflects the profound respect and gratitude for General Lagbaja’s extraordinary service.”*
The Nigeria Police Force also extended heartfelt condolences to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, as well as to General Lagbaja’s family, colleagues, and loved ones during this difficult time. “His legacy and contributions to Nigeria’s security will forever be remembered,” the statement concluded.
