Ninety-three Zamfara students on scholarships at Cyprus International University are currently stranded due to unpaid tuition, accommodation, and feeding allowances, as well as issues with their documentation.
The situation was highlighted in a press conference on Tuesday by the Zamfara State Commissioner for Education, Wadatau Madawaki. He attributed the students’ plight to the previous administration under Governor Bello Matawalle, now the Minister of State for Defence.
Madawaki assured that the current administration, under Governor Dauda Lawal, is taking steps to resolve the outstanding debts.
He explained that the students had been left in a vulnerable position due to a lack of proper arrangements, and although some payments had been made in the past, the previous government failed to fulfill its commitments, leaving the students without support for nearly a year.
The commissioner also noted that there was no formal agreement between the previous administration and the university, further complicating the students’ situation.
However, he commended Governor Lawal for addressing the issue and making progress toward settling the debts, including the renewal of expired student documents.
