On November 1, 2024, members of the Kogi State House of Assembly expressed concern over the rising incidence of drug abuse among youths in the state. During an urgent motion presented in the assembly, Bin Tijani, the representative for Lokoja I State Constituency, advocated for the establishment of a rehabilitation center to support victims of substance abuse, sexual violence, and mental health issues. He highlighted that these problems have contributed to the tragic loss of many young lives in Kogi.
Tijani lamented the growing prevalence of drug abuse, rape, and gender-based violence in Lokoja and beyond, emphasizing the trauma experienced by victims. He pointed out the absence of a dedicated rehabilitation center in Kogi State, forcing many individuals to seek help from unqualified caregivers.
He noted that one non-governmental organization, MOHAB, is currently overwhelmed with the responsibility of caring for these victims, and efforts to engage the state government for support have been largely ineffective.
Tijani argued for the urgent need to establish a rehabilitation center, stating, “Given the increasing cases of abuse and the mental trauma that follows, it is essential for the state government to take action. This center would offer physiotherapy, occupational therapy, and various rehabilitative treatments for both physical and mental distress.”
In addition to addressing addiction, the proposed center would support the enforcement of laws related to gender-based violence and child rights, as well as contribute to crime reduction in Kogi State.
Deputy Speaker Comfort Egwaba, who chaired the session, affirmed the motion’s relevance and directed the Clerk to relay the House’s resolution to the state government.
