The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has condemned the recent attacks by Fulani herdsmen on communities in Anyiin, Logo, and parts of Buruku and Agatu Local Government Areas in Benue State.
In a statement released on Friday by the party’s Publicity Secretary, Mr. Tim Nyor, the PDP expressed its outrage over the violence, which has led to the tragic deaths of numerous individuals and the destruction of property worth millions.
The statement read: “We extend our deepest condolences to the families affected during this trying time. Our thoughts and prayers are with all those impacted by this violence.”
The PDP described it as “absolutely unacceptable” that innocent citizens continue to suffer from such brutal attacks while the government and security forces fail to fulfill their protective roles.
Nyor specifically criticized the apparent silence and inaction of the APC-led government under Governor Hyacinth Alia, stating, “The government’s failure to address these ongoing attacks is alarming and indicates a troubling indifference towards the safety and welfare of Benue’s citizens.”
He noted that despite the existence of the Benue State Open Grazing Prohibition and Ranches Establishment Law, grazing persists alongside a tragic rise in violence within communities. “This law was intended to safeguard our communities and promote peaceful coexistence, yet the blatant disregard for it reveals a lack of commitment from state authorities to confront these challenges.”
The PDP reiterated its profound disappointment with the state government, remarking, “A government that swiftly detains its citizens for minor accusations yet fails to take decisive action against such attacks exemplifies failure.”
The party called for immediate intervention and comprehensive measures to protect Benue communities, hold the Fulani herdsmen accountable, and strengthen the enforcement of the Anti-Open Grazing Law.
Furthermore, the PDP urged President Bola Tinubu to intervene urgently to halt the bloodshed in Benue, citing the inefficiency of Governor Alia despite significant monthly federal allocations and security funds.
