The body of the late former Senate President Joseph Wayas will be transported by helicopter from UJ Esuene Stadium in Calabar to his home community of Bassang in Obanliku LGA, Cross River State, on November 30, 2024.
Gill Nsa, Chief Press Secretary to Governor Bassey Otu and chairman of the central planning committee for the funeral, confirmed this in Calabar. “We won’t subject Wayas’ body to a lengthy road journey to his final resting place,” Nsa stated.
The announcement followed a news conference by Dorn Cklaimz, the chairman of the central planning committee, who revealed the burial date.
Nsa noted that the main funeral service will take place at UJ Esuene Stadium in Calabar rather than in Bassang. The event will be attended by former heads of state, living former Senate Presidents, former and current governors, and various dignitaries.
After the funeral, the body will be airlifted to Bassang, where a mausoleum is prepared for its final resting place, Nsa added.
According to Cklaimz, the Office of the Senate President will cover the transportation costs from the National Hospital in Abuja to the Calabar Stadium and then to Bassang community.
