Paul Ibe, Media Adviser to former PDP presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar, has criticized Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike for suggesting that youths in Abuja should be content with becoming taxi drivers.
Ibe argued that many young people turn to taxi driving out of necessity due to an unfavorable economic climate rather than choice. His comments came in response to Wike’s recent speech, where the minister presented cars to some youths for commercial driving and encouraged them not to feel embarrassed about their new roles.
In a post on X, Ibe stated, “This is simply not true. Nigerian youths did not create the economic challenges that leave them with limited options; those in power did, through ineffective policies that deny them real opportunities.”
He highlighted that many youths resort to driving taxis, whether with green taxis or services like Uber and Bolt, as a means of survival. Ibe emphasized, “Is this really what we want for our youths—driving taxis? They are capable of so much more and have consistently shown that their true potential is hindered by those who fail to invest in their future.”
