A Fulham defender reveals the impact Lionel Messi had on his football journey, detailing how the legendary player inspired him to represent Nigeria on the international stage.
Nigerian defender Calvin Bassey has shared how Lionel Messi’s mesmerizing performances on the field inspired his decision to play for the Super Eagles.
Bassey was raised in England, though he was born to Nigerian parents in Italy.
The Fulham star had the opportunity to represent any one of three countries at an international level.
However, he chose to represent Nigeria after witnessing Messi score a goal against them during the group stage of the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.
“When Nigeria faced Argentina, they lost 2-1 in what was a great game. Naturally, Messi being Messi scored that incredible goal,” Bassey mentioned to Sky Sports (as reported by Afrik-Foot).
“I believe it was knee, foot, then right foot. It was the best. However, this motivated me even more to want to play for Nigeria and perform on a big stage.”
