Ekiti State government has compensated 377 landowners with N300 million, facilitating land acquisition for the anticipated airport project to enhance state connectivity.
On Thursday, Ekiti State Governor Biodun Oyebanji disbursed N300 million to 377 landowners whose properties were acquired for the development of the Ekiti State Agro Allied Cargo Airport in Ado Ekiti’s capital city.
Addressing claims that the airport project was a misplaced priority, Oyebanji explained that the facility is designed to enhance the state’s economy by creating new economic opportunities and attracting investments while also supporting industrial growth.
Deputy Governor Monisade Afuye, acting on behalf of Oyebanji, addressed the gathering in Ado Ekiti during the distribution of cheques to landowners from Ijan, Igbemo, Afao, Iworoko, and other areas.
She stated that the event signifies the third and final round of compensation payments to individuals and families impacted by land acquisition for the development of the ambitious Ekiti State Cargo Airport project.
The governor, however, urged those whose lands were acquired for public purposes and have not yet received compensation to refrain from disrupting contractors at the sites. He assured them that all their expectations will be fulfilled to compensate for their losses.
He further explained that the airport’s vision is to create an infrastructure enhancing the state’s connectivity to national and international markets, while also acting as a gateway for agriculture, commerce, and tourism to boost local businesses.
The Ekiti State Cargo Airport Project was envisioned not only as an infrastructural accomplishment but also as essential to our goal of promoting economic diversification, boosting local industry, and generating new opportunities for the people of Ekiti.
Our vision for the airport is to enhance the state’s connectivity with national and international markets, while also acting as a gateway for agriculture, commerce, and tourism. This will drive local business growth and attract investments that benefit our communities.
Oyebanji praised the farmers and landowners for their sacrifices, dedication, and patience. He mentioned that compensating them was aimed at recognizing their patriotism towards a noble and shared goal.
The individuals we are celebrating today have shown an admirable dedication to the future of Ekiti by choosing to adapt their lives for a greater good that will ultimately benefit every citizen in this state.
To the landowners, I express my gratitude for your patience and understanding. Today’s ceremony signifies the distribution of the third and final installment of compensation to 377 claimants.
“Let this stand as proof of our administration’s commitment to keeping its promises. We recognize that providing timely and fair compensation to those impacted is both a legal duty and a moral imperative. Your sacrifice and collaboration with us are greatly appreciated,” he stated.
Oyebanji stated that his administration is dedicated to establishing a favorable environment in which every Ekiti resident can experience the benefits of the airport facility, including more business opportunities, job creation, and enhanced infrastructure development.
Speaking to the claimants, Prof. James Olaleye, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Geographic Information System, Lands and Survey, stated that the compensation acts as indemnity for losses experienced by landowners. He noted that it would help alleviate their distress.
I trust that everyone involved will recognize the sincere efforts of the current government to alleviate their concerns. I assure all individuals awaiting compensation for other project sites that their outstanding payments will be resolved shortly.
He urged the public to avoid disrupting ongoing projects with threats of violence or any actions that could undermine the state’s peace.
Representing the benefitting communities, Chief Ojo Awe and Mr. Olufemi Oso praised the governor for understanding the challenges faced by landowners and promptly processing their outstanding compensation payments.
Speaking on behalf of the nine communities that contributed land for the airport’s construction, he expressed gratitude to the governor. He acknowledged the loss of property was difficult but thanked God for seeing progress in this project and looked forward to future benefits it will bring everyone involved.
