In anticipation of the upcoming 2024 National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) South West Zone-D Convention, the Chairman of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Joint Campus Council (JCC), Ondo State Axis, Comrade Oluwarotimi Tobiloba Joshua (JOSH), has issued a strong call to Nigerian students to reject violence and foster a spirit of peaceful coexistence. The convention, set to take place from Tuesday, October 15 to Friday, October 18, 2024, will bring together students from across the South West geopolitical zone of Nigeria, comprising Ekiti, Lagos, Ogun, Ondo, Osun, and Oyo states.
Addressing students in Akure, the Ondo State capital, Comrade JOSH stressed the importance of maintaining peace and unity throughout the convention. He urged all participants to act as one another’s brothers and sisters, emphasizing that the event should serve as a model for non-violent interaction and constructive dialogue.
“As we prepare to host this significant convention, it is crucial that we all embrace peace, mutual respect, and understanding,” said Comrade JOSH. “We must remember that the future of Nigerian students lies in our ability to engage in non-violent resolutions to conflicts, while demonstrating that unity and progress can be achieved without resorting to aggression.”
The NANS JCC Ondo Chairman also charged the Convention Planning Committee (CPC) with the responsibility of ensuring a smooth and peaceful process. He encouraged them to remain positive, act with integrity, and diligently promote peaceful engagement throughout the duration of the convention.
“This convention offers us an opportunity to showcase the best of our abilities as student leaders. I trust the CPC will continue to uphold the values of fairness, transparency, and inclusivity while working tirelessly to ensure a hitch-free event,” he remarked.
Comrade JOSH went on to acknowledge the significant role of Ondo State Government in supporting the event and hosting students from all South West states. He expressed appreciation for the government’s efforts in creating a welcoming environment and ensuring that the necessary security measures are in place to guarantee the safety of all participants.
“We are grateful to Ondo State Government for embracing this convention and for the support shown towards the students of the South West zone,” he said. “We are confident that the security arrangements put in place will ensure a peaceful and orderly convention, from start to finish.”
In his address, Comrade JOSH also extended a warm welcome to all delegates arriving from various institutions across the South West region. He called on them to adhere to the rules and regulations set by the CPC, maintaining the decorum that the convention demands. He reassured them that security personnel will be on hand before, during, and after the convention to safeguard the election process and ensure their well-being.
“The Sunshine State has always been known for its peaceful atmosphere, and we are committed to preserving this reputation throughout the convention,” he added. “I urge every participant to follow the guidelines laid down by the CPC and conduct themselves responsibly. Together, we can make this convention a success, reflective of our collective dedication to progress and peaceful coexistence.”
The NANS South West Zone-D Convention is a significant event where students from the region will elect their representatives. The convention, which will be held at Igbatoro Road, Akure, promises to be a defining moment for student leadership across the South West zone. As preparations continue, Comrade JOSH’s message of peace and unity serves as a reminder of the pivotal role students play in shaping a harmonious future for the country.
“Let us use this opportunity to demonstrate that Nigerian students are capable of leading with wisdom, empathy, and peace,” Comrade JOSH concluded. “Our strength lies in our unity, and it is through this unity that we will continue to move forward as a strong, progressive student body.”
Comrade JOSH’s call for peace and non-violence resonates with the larger mission of NANS, which seeks to advocate for the rights and welfare of Nigerian students while promoting positive societal change through peaceful means. As the countdown to the 2024 NANS South West Zone-D Convention begins, the students of the South West are encouraged to heed his words and work together in the spirit of unity, peace, and progress.
