With less than two months to the Ondo Governorship election, the State has formally entered campaign season following the release of schedules and activities by the two major political parties, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Promises Cancelled (APC), haba, All Progressives Congress (APC).
Yesterday, the APC officially commenced its campaign with a flag-off in Ondo Town. Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, among several other questionable promises, announced the implementation of the new national minimum wage, stating that Ondo State workers will now receive ₦73,000 as the minimum wage.
It is rather surprising, given that many other states have already implemented this wage since its announcement by the Federal Government. Moreover, this is not the first time the governor has made such a pronouncement. Back on August 6th, he promised that workers in the state would receive the new minimum wage – a promise that went unfulfilled until yesterday’s campaign flag-off, where the same commitment was halfheartedly reiterated.
As a keen observer of the State’s affairs, it is clear that Governor Aiyedatiwa’s renewed pledge to pay the new minimum wage is another desperate attempt to woo votes from civil servants, especially as the people’s determination to seek an alternative to his leadership grows. The Ilaje-born politician seems to be relying on these last-minute promises to salvage his dwindling popularity ahead of the November election, but will the people be convinced by mere words?
