A medical practitioner at the National Eye Care Centre in Kaduna who was abducted in December 2023, has finally regained her freedom. She was released on Wednesday evening alongside her nephew, Mugni Folaranmi, who had also been taken captive.
“It is true, Alhamdulilah, they have both been released,” a colleague of Dr. Popoola confirmed to News Central TV.
At the time of the kidnapping, Dr. Popoola, a mother of five, was breastfeeding her youngest child. She was abducted along with her husband, a military officer, and her nephew, Mugni. Her husband was released in March while Popoola and her nephew remained in captivity.
Popoola’s kidnapping had sparked widespread outrage, particularly among the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD), which went on strike in August to press for their colleague’s release.
The President, Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors, Tope Osundara on Wednesday, confirmed the release of Popoola and her nephew.
“Yes, it is true. It happened today (Wednesday). For now, we have insulated her away from people. We only allow very limited access to her,” he stated.
Osundara also disclosed that no ransom was paid to secure her release
