A Bill for an Act to Amend the Federal Universities of Agriculture Act, Cap. F22 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004, to Establish Federal University of Agriculture, Akure, Ondo State on Wednesday, October 30, 2024, passed the second reading in the House of Representatives.
The Bill has been referred to the Committee on Agric Institutions for further legislative actions.
The Bill was sponsored by the lawmaker representing Akure North and Akure South Federal Constituency in the National Assembly, Prince Abiodun Derin Adesida.
When finally passed into law, the College of Agriculture, Akure, will be elevated to a full fledged University of Agriculture.
The Bill passed the First Reading on the floor of the House of Representatives on Friday, May 9th, 2024.
The institution was established in January 1957 by the then government of the western Nigeria.
It was meant to develop the agricultural sector by training certified agricultural assistants including middle level manpower who would help address the agricultural gap in the the country.
It is worthy of note that the Akure School of Agriculture is the only Agric college yet to be upgraded among its contemporaries in the country.
