Comrade Usman Okai Austin, a former candidate for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the Dekina/Bassa Federal House of Representatives and national coordinator of the National Youths Frontier, has stated that Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde is “overwhelmingly qualified” to pursue the presidency in 2027.
Okai cited Makinde’s two-term leadership in Oyo State, highlighting his visible achievements and extensive political experience as key qualifications for the presidential role. He made these comments in response to rumors suggesting that Makinde is a mole for the All Progressives Congress (APC).
In his statement, Okai emphasized, “There’s no harm in a governor aspiring for the presidency.” He acknowledged that although Makinde has not yet declared his intentions for after his tenure, there is significant support among his followers advocating for his candidacy.
“The decision to contest is entirely his,” Okai remarked, affirming Makinde’s right to enter the race if he chooses to do so. He also noted that the 2027 PDP presidential nomination will be determined by delegates from Nigeria’s 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.
While it may be premature to speculate, Okai believes Makinde represents a generational shift in Nigerian politics, appealing to the younger demographic. As a prominent figure within the PDP, Makinde has built a nationwide network that could bolster a presidential campaign.
Okai underscored that if the governor decides to pursue a higher office, it will mark a significant milestone for a party increasingly focused on youth-led leadership and transformative change. He concluded by recognizing Makinde’s commitment to public service and developmental governance in Oyo State, despite the governor’s silence on the 2027 presidential race.
