NANS CONDUCTS PROJECT TOUR IN BAYELSA STATE, CONFERRED AWARD OF HERO OF NIGERIAN STUDENTS ON GOVERNOR DOUYE DIRI
Following the successful conclusion of the 85th National Senate Sitting, the leadership of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) Senate Secretariat embarked on a project tour across Bayelsa State.
Leading the delegation of NANS, the Senate President, Dist. Sen. Akinteye Babatunde Afeez (BABTEE) conducted a project tour and visits to several landmark developments, both completed and ongoing. The project sites that were inspected are:
1. Government Science and Technical College, Swali
2. New Legislators’ Quarters, New Yenagoa City GRA
3. New Commissioners’ Quarters, New Yenagoa City GRA
4. Road networks within New Yenagoa City GRA
5. Phases 2 and 3 of Glory Drive
6. Imgbi Bridge
Subsequently, the Senate President led a delegation of NANS to the Governor of Bayelsa State, Sen. Douye Diri.
The President of the Senate, National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) and his entourage were welcomed by the State Governor of Bayelsa, Sen. Douye Diri alongside the state Executive Council at the state executive council chamber.
After proper introduction of the State Executive Council members present and the delegation of NANS, the Senate President of NANS, Dist. Sen. Akinteye Babatunde Afeez (BABTEE) addressed the congregation.
He expressed profound gratitude and commended the Governor’s progressive strides, particularly in the education sector, which have reinforced Bayelsa State as a bastion of learning and development.
The Senate President in his address appreciated the Governor of Bayelsa State for graciously hosting the 85th Senate Sitting of NANS.
He acknowledged the hospitality of the Bayelsa State government and its immense contribution to the success of the 85th Senate sitting.
Subsequently, the Senate President acknowledged and lauded the Governor’s developmental achievements in education.
He noted that, after an extensive project tour, NANS leaders witnessed the Governor’s commitment to educational advancement which is evident in various landmark projects across the state, notably:
Establishment of Technical Colleges in Each LGA: By prioritizing vocational education across all eight Local Government Areas, the Governor is championing a workforce poised for technological and practical relevance that’d make Nigerian students employers of labours instead of job seekers.
Provision of Vehicles for the State Student Union: This logistical support empowers student leaders, facilitating seamless engagement and mobilization within the student community.
Hosting of the Annual Bayelsa State Students Summit: Creating a vital platform for dialogue, His Excellency fosters strong rapport between government and students, enhancing their involvement in governance.
Infrastructural Connectivity: Pioneering the construction of roads linking the eight LGAs to the state capital, such as the ongoing Nembe/Brass Road and Gloryland Drive, apparently, this would boost accessibility and development.
Enhancement of Security Measures: His commitment to maintaining a safe and secure environment on campuses across Bayelsa reflects his prioritization of student welfare.
Educational Reforms Embracing Technological Integration: By steering education towards tech-based learning systems, His Excellency prepares Bayelsa’s youth for the future’s demands.
Urban Renewal Efforts: The New Yenagoa City, featuring the modern House of Assembly and Commissioners’ Quarters, stands as a testament to Bayelsa’s urban transformation and commitment to progress.
No doubt, the Governor’s efforts to prioritize the well-being and development of students have earned him high regard within the student community. We especially commend his decision to reappoint the Honourable Commissioner for Education and include notable student union leaders in the Students’ Management Committee, signifying his commitment to inclusive governance.
The Senate President lauded the Governor for seeing to the sponsorship of Bayelsa students to represent Nigeria in the World School Basketball Championship in Belgrade, Serbia where John Wilberforce from Bishop Dimeari Grammar School being recognized among the top five MVPs. Without Bayelsa’s sponsorship, Nigeria would not have been represented.
Furthermore, the Senate President humbly appealed to the Governor that, to further strengthen student engagement in governance, he should in his magnanimity engage more notable student leaders across the state.
Consequently, in recognition of the Governor’s exceptional exemplary dedication to educational development, the NANS Senate Secretariat conferred on Governor Douye Diri the prestigious title and award of “Hero of Nigerian Students.”
Apparently, his efforts and unique educational initiatives and his progressive strides have transformed Bayelsa State’s educational landscape and have also set a benchmark of excellence across the nation.
Subsequently, the Governor in his remark, expressed gratitude to the NANS Senate Secretariat for hosting the 85th Senate sitting in Bayelsa. He applauded the Senate President and his delegation for touring the state’s ongoing projects. He affirmed his belief that education is the foundation of societal liberation, he further stated that that any government that neglects education must ultimately invest in correctional facilities.
Governor Diri further reminisced on Bayelsa’s past struggles for justice, emphasizing that the current climate of peace and security is a hard-won achievement. He reaffirmed his commitment to integrating more student leaders into his administration, emphasizing his vision to cultivate a generation of job creators, thereby addressing the endemic challenge of unemployment.
Governor Diri reiterated his invaluable support for students and his vision for a progressive, education-driven Bayelsa State after which the meeting was brought to an end.
